Rising Stars: Rapman

07 10 2019

Rapman, real name Andrew Onwubolu, earned his musical moniker with his introspective storytelling rap and social commentary.

Inspired by Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas and Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky, he ventured into filmmaking in 2014 with YouTube series Blue Story, based on his experiences as a child growing up in south London. In 2018, he created, directed and narrated Shiro’s Story, a three part YouTube crime drama following a drug dealer who discovers a shocking family secret and is betrayed by his best friend. With cameos from UK rappers Cadet, Konan, Headie One and Not3s, the series went viral and subsequently racked up over 19 million views in total, leading to Onwubolu signing what he described as a ‘life-changing’ deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation. On November 22, he'll release the feature length adaptation of Blue Story, in collaboration with BBC and Paramount, with a cast including Top Boy's Micheal Ward and The Legend Of Tarzan actor Stephen Odubola.
